Community Service Officer (part-time)

Medford Police Department is recruiting for multiple part-time Community Service Officers to perform support service tasks related to the department’s mission. We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated with excellent communication skills and who want to make a positive impact in our community.   

Community Service Officers (CSO’s) are civilian employees who perform a variety of duties that do not require the authority of a sworn law enforcement officer but have a high factor of responsibility, liability, and criticality such as investigating code enforcement complaints, issuing citations for violations of the Medford Municipal Code, completing required documentation, and testifying in court. CSO’s are not Police Officers and do not make full custody arrests. Go to Medfordoregon.gov to apply for this position!  


Required Eligibility Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  • Must be 18 years old or older
  • Have valid driver’s license by date of hire with a good driving record
  • Ability to pass an extensive background investigation
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment psychological exam and drug screen following federal law (which includes testing for cannabis) 
  • Possess good communication skills
  • Ability to contact subjects involved in minor offenses and take enforcement action
  • Be comfortable in uniform with police markings and perform non-sworn police duties
Flexible Schedule!
This part-time position is flexible and can be scheduled up to 25 hours/week based on the employee and department needs with the possibility of weekends and evening shifts (not including graveyard shifts).


 Compensation & Information on Benefits:
The anticipated hiring range for the Community Service Officer position is $28.34 (first step)Directly related experience and qualifications will be evaluated alongside others who perform work of comparable character as required by Pay Equity Law.  Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

 Examples of Job Duties:
Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Provides non-sworn staff support to the Police Department on a wide variety of programs, projects, and services.
  • Performs sub-standard residential and commercial building inspections and coordinates with other City department (e.g., Building and Planning).
  • Enforces and ensures compliance with a variety of federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations related to nuisance abatement; writes warnings and citations as necessary; schedules follow-up inspections.
  • Assists sworn officers in traffic control, crowd control, and traffic collisions as required.
  • Responds to non-injury traffic collisions, obtains statements from involved parties, and completes standard police reports for review by staff supervisors or sworn supervisory staff.
  • Interprets and applies Oregon Uniform Housing Code.
  • Prepares police reports and other documentation for dissemination to appropriate departments and/or external agencies. 
  • Handles basic evidence collection.
  • Ensures that police reports and other related documentation are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assist the Livability Team Officers with contacting homeless on the street and in camps.
  • Coordinate community resources to connect with the homeless.
  • Must have the ability to effectively interact and diffuse situations involving angry or irate members of the public.
  • Attend community stakeholder meetings.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices to find creative solutions to address homelessness.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Police Chief or designated staff.
