Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Possession of DPSST NFPA Fire Investigator certification within 12 months of hire date.
Additional Requirements for Deputy Fire Marshal I:
  • Two (2) years full-time paid experience in firefighting and/or fire prevention with a municipality or other government fire agency, or equivalent experience including commercial building inspection or plan review; and
  • Possession of OSFM Oregon Fire Inspector 1 competency recognition within 12 months of hire date.
Additional Requirements for Deputy Fire Marshal II:
  • Four (4) years full-time paid experience in firefighting and/or fire prevention with a municipality or other government fire agency, or equivalent experience; and
  • Possession of OSFM Oregon Fire Inspector 2 competency recognition within 12 months of hire date.
  • Bachelor degree in Fire Science or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • Associate degree in Fire Science or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
Additional Requirements for Deputy Fire Marshal III:
  • Four (4) years of full-time paid experience in firefighting and/or fire prevention, fire and life safety plans review, fire suppression and detection systems plan review, or equivalent experience; and
  • Possession of OSFM Oregon Fire Marshal competency recognition within 12 months of hire date.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • Associate degree in Fire Science or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
Available Schedule: 
  • Monday – Friday, 8 hours per day
  • On-call one week every 5–6 weeks
