Required Education and Experience: - Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
- Two (2) years of equipment operation, general construction, maintenance experience, or combination to successfully perform the duties of the job.
- Completion of a one (1) year Construction Technology certificate program may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Knowledge of applicable state and local vehicle ordinances; weight limit capacities; civil construction and maintenance practices; occupational hazards and related safety precautions; etc.
- Possession of a Class A Oregon Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain CDL and tanker endorsement within one year of hire date.
- New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).
- Maintaining a CDL is a condition of employment.
- Ability to maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
Special Qualifications:Desired Attributes:- Wastewater Collections System Operator certification.
- Experience in repair, replacement, or maintenance of piped utility systems.
- Previous public works experience.
- Certified flagger, TCT, and TCS
- Experience with traffic control.
- First Aid and CPR certified.
- Experience operating heavy equipment including: excavators, backhoes, graders, and paving equipment.
- Previous asphalt paving experience.
- Previous concrete forming, pouring, and finishing experience.
- Knowledge of paving maintenance principles and practices.
Available Schedule: - Monday - Thursday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM
- Employees in this position are often required to adjust to earlier start times to accommodate working in high traffic areas.

The anticipated hiring range for the Public Works Technician position is $26.48 (first step) to $27.80 or $29.19 (second or third step). The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, and qualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps. Essential Functions of the Position:- Creates, installs, inspects, repairs, and alters a variety of signs, systems, equipment, structures, and facilities, maintains, repairs, and cleans streets, sewer lines, storm drainage infrastructure, bridges, pump stations, grounds, and facilities.
- Performs manual labor activities, which may include excavating, grading, sidewalks, or underground utilities and cleaning up debris and cutting trees and brush.
- Performs work zone traffic control and flagging.
- Routinely drives light to medium duty trucks.
- Operates a variety of equipment and/or large trucks which may include backhoes, skid steers, line stripers, dump trucks, mowers, combination vacuum trucks, excavators, pavers, loaders, rollers, water trucks, street sweepers, etc.
- Operates and maintains a variety of hand and/or power tools, which may include concrete saws, mixers, chain saws, jack hammers, pumps, and/or a variety of other equipment.
- Completes and maintains a variety of logs, documents, maps, and reports regarding materials handled, equipment operations, mileage, fuel, and oil used, and other related information.
- Performs emergency services during adverse weather conditions, which may include removing snow and debris from roadways, sanding roads, high water response, downed trees, or limbs in the Right-of-Way, etc.
- Responds to varying situations: motor vehicle accident clean-up and traffic control, sewer and storm drainage concerns, spill response and clean up, and hazard removal from the right-of-way.
- Responds to afterhours and weekend service calls as needed. Can be placed on-call.
- The scope of assigned area of responsibility will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Public Works Director.
